Abu Dhabi International Airport
Abu Dhabi International Airport (ADIA), located in the UAE's capital city of Abu Dhabi, is one of the world's fastest-growing airports in terms of passenger traffic, number of new flights added, and investment in infrastructure, at a cost of US$800 million. Also the second largest airport in the UAE, Abu Dhabi's terminal building has a structural roof deck consisting of 18 primary and 36 secondary trusses. The main arches have a maximum span of 179.4 m, a corresponding sagittal height of 41.1 m and an arch height of 4.5 m. Each main arch is a spatial frame structure consisting of two planar arches sharing a common chord and intersecting at an angle of 60 degrees.
Project Overview:
The airport's innovative design features a series of sloping metal arches and steel beams that support the terminal's undulating roof structure and provide a distinctive silhouette against the sky. Playing a vital role in the global competition for luxury air travel and transit airports, the midfield terminal complex will handle up to 80 million passengers annually to meet the needs of the rapidly expanding capital city's growth. The design and engineering of the terminal overcame the enormous challenges posed by the complexity of the function to achieve a level of excellence in technology and material workmanship. The optimized X-shape and the wide, massive arches minimize passenger walking time. The 180-meter-long bridging, large-span inclined arches ensure a 5-meter-high, column-free departure hall design - a public atrium that provides open outdoor space.
